Trade assistant labour hire in Sydney

The right trade assistant makes a tradesperson twice as fast. Ticketed, inducted TAs who turn up, know the gear and keep the job moving.

The role

What our trade assistants do on Sydney sites

A trade assistant is not just a labourer. On a Sydney industrial site the TA is the person holding fire watch while a welder works inside a bin, standing hole watch at a confined space entry with the gas monitor and the log, setting up chain blocks and slings so the fitter can pull the pump, running the grinder on the prep so the boilermaker can weld, pulling cable and fixing tray so the electrician stays on the licensed work, and leaving the area clean enough that the next shift does not trip over anything.

We supply trade assistants to maintenance crews, shutdowns and projects across Sydney and NSW: electrical TAs, mechanical TAs, fabrication TAs and general industrial TAs. Many are apprentices in waiting, tradespeople from overseas working through recognition, or experienced hands who know a plant better than some of the tradies on it.

  • Electrical TAs: cable pulling, tray and ladder, terminations under supervision, test and tag.
  • Mechanical TAs: rigging gear, conveyor work, pump pulls, bolting and torqueing.
  • Fabrication TAs: grinding, prep, fit-up assistance, fire watch and hot work spotting.
  • Confined space standby: hole watch, gas testing, permit and log keeping.

The Smart Standard

How we test trade assistants

TAs are tested on practical knowledge, by tradespeople. Gear identification: shackles, slings, chain blocks, podgers, grinders, torque wrenches, and what each is for. Safe manual handling, demonstrated. How to run a fire watch and a hole watch: what they monitor, what they log, and exactly when they stop the job and call it. Reading a SWMS and a permit and explaining what it lets them do and what it does not.

Attitude matters as much as tickets here, which is why the psychometric profile and the conversation with a previous supervisor carry weight. A TA who asks before they act is the one we send.

Engagements

How Sydney sites use our TAs

01

Shutdown crews

TAs alongside our fitters, boilermakers and electricians, inducted together, so every tradesperson has the hands they need.

02

Project support

Cable pulls, tray runs, materials handling and housekeeping on installs and relocations.

03

Breakdowns

A second pair of hands so the tradesperson fixing the fault is not also running for parts.

04

Shift cover

Cover for your own TAs and plant hands across rosters and leave.

05

Long-term plant TAs

A TA embedded in your maintenance crew who learns your plant and stays.

06

Temp-to-perm

Trial on site, then hire, often as the start of an apprenticeship.

Smart Industrial, what a fantastic service these guys offer. Very professional and very adaptable which suits our business requirements as our procedures can often change at the last minute. Very professional organisation and a quality team to deal with, no other service comes close to these guys 10/10.

Questions

Trade assistant hire FAQs

Do your trade assistants need a trade qualification?

No. A TA role is defined by tickets, experience and attitude rather than a trade certificate. We test all three. Many of our TAs are working towards a trade or have one from overseas that is going through recognition.

How many TAs do I need for a shutdown crew?

It depends on the work. Hot work and confined space entries need dedicated watch roles; mechanical pulls need hands on the rigging. Tell us the scope and we will suggest a crew mix of tradespeople and TAs rather than guessing a ratio.

Can a TA stand hole watch or fire watch on my site?

Yes, where they hold current Confined Space and Gas Test tickets and hot work awareness, which we verify. Your site-specific permit training then applies on top, and our TAs are used to that.

Can they operate forklifts and EWPs?

Many hold forklift (LF) and EWP (WP) High Risk Work Licences, and some hold dogging (DG). Tell us what plant the role involves and we will match a TA with the right licence and a VOC where your site requires one.

Can I use a TA placement as a pathway to an apprentice?

Yes. Temp-to-perm is common with TAs: trial them on site, see how they work with your crew, then take them on. We are glad when that happens.

Are they inducted before they arrive?

Every TA completes the Smart Industrial safety induction before they step on your site, with tickets, VEVO and police check already verified and a pre-employment medical done. Your site induction sits on top.
